Brooklyn Waterfront Tour: Past & Present, operated in partnership with Turnstile Tours, debuts this Saturday August 8th

This tour features two itineraries in rotation with a guest speaker on each! Get an in depth waterfront view of the Brooklyn Navy Yard and several other key waterfront sites as well as a close pass by the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

The Brooklyn Greenway Initiative (9/12, 10/3) is an organization working to create a bicycle and pedestrian pathway along the waterfront to facilitate transportation, recreation, and waterfront access, and provide much-needed green space and water management infrastructure. BGI’s board chairman Michael Cairl will be joining the tour on October 3.

Nathan Kensinger (8/8, 9/26) is a photographer and filmmaker who has been documenting stories of the abandoned and industrial landscapes on New York City’s edges for more than a decade, combining haunting photography with rigorous research and reporting. His work has been featured at Brooklyn Historical Society, the Museum of the City of New York, and BRIC, and he is the co-creator of the art project the Newtown Creek Armada.

Noah Chesnin (8/22) is the Policy Program Manager for the Wildlife Conservation Society’s New York Seascape Program. Working out of Coney Island’s New York Aquarium, Noah will share his work on studying fisheries of the New York region, looking at both the historical impacts of fishing and the health of our maritime ecosystems today.

New York Environment Report (8/15, 9/19, 10/10) is a non-profit news outlet founded in 2014 to do in-depth, public interest reporting on the critical environmental issues affecting New York City and State. We will be joined by NYER co-founder and editor-in-chief Sarah Crean and managing editor Emily Manley, who will discuss their reporting on resiliency, water quality, and marine ecology.
